Jord adds solar and storage at Dominican bioenergy plant


The Swedish company’ s biomass plant in San Pedro de Macorís will generate around 567,000 kWh of renewable electricity a year and avoid roughly 340 metric tons of CO2. The solar-plus-storage system was designed and built by Dominican renewable energy company ENSO.
SAN PEDRO DE MACORÍS, Dominican Republic — August 2026 — Jord has brought online a 368.6 kWp solar photovoltaic system with 261 kWh of battery storage at its biomass processing plant in San Pedro de Macorís. The installation is expected to produce about 567,000 kWh a year — roughly equivalent to 100% of the site’s current annual electricity demand — and to avoid some 340 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
The system was developed and installed by Dominican renewable energy company ENSO. Generating on site cuts the plant’s reliance on the national grid and its exposure to electricity price volatility, while the batteries store daytime solar for use outside peak generation hours and keep production running through outages — a recurring operational risk for industrial users in the country.
At San Pedro de Macorís, Jord grows high-yield C4 perennial grasses across roughly 500 hectares of marginal and degraded land. The biomass is processed into solid renewable biofuels that can replace coal and other fossil fuels in heat-intensive industrial processes. Adding solar lowers the footprint of that production further, so that both the fuel Jord sells and a growing share of the energy used to make it now come from renewable sources.

The project comes as the Dominican Republic continues to diversify its energy mix toward renewables. For industrial users, on-site generation paired with storage can make energy costs more predictable and strengthen continuity of operations — and, as San Pedro de Macorís shows, it can be applied to plants that produce renewable fuels themselves. The installation is the latest step in Jord’s expansion in the country.
