Black Pellets: Phase Out Coal. Keep Your Infrastructure.

Why Jord black pellets
Coal-Equivalent Performance. Carbon Negative Footprint
Torrefaction lifts C4-grass to a net calorific value of ≥5.8 kWh/kg — approaching bituminous coal while remaining carbon dioxide-equivalent negative across its lifecycle. Every tonne burned actively reverses emissions, not just avoids them.
True Drop-In Compatibility with Coal Infrastructure
Hydrophobic, grindable, and behaves like coal: stored outdoors uncovered, milled through existing pulverisers, fed through unmodified conveyors and burners. A renewable transition with minimal capex — no new silos, mills, or combustion systems.
Higher Energy Density. Lower Logistics Cost
Torrefaction concentrates energy by removing volatiles and water — roughly 30% more energy per tonne than white pellets. Fewer shipments, longer storage, and less degradation per kWh delivered.
Torrefied pellets made from C4-grass. Coal-equivalent performance. Zero deforestation. Zero additives.
Jord's black pellets are a torrefied solid biofuel produced exclusively from perennial C4-grass cultivated on our farms in Senegal. The pellets undergo a controlled torrefaction process — heating the biomass to 250–300°C in a low-oxygen environment — which removes moisture and volatile compounds, concentrates energy content, and fundamentally changes the physical and chemical properties of the fuel.
The result is a dense, hydrophobic, friable pellet that mirrors the handling and combustion characteristics of coal while remaining carbon dioxide-equivalent negative across its full lifecycle. Black pellets resist water absorption, can be stored outdoors, and grind cleanly through pulveriser mills designed for coal — making them a true drop-in replacement for thermal and metallurgical fossil fuels in industrial-scale operations.

Calculate Your CO₂ Savings
See how much your coal-fired or co-firing operations could reduce annual emissions by switching to Jord black pellets — with no infrastructure rebuild required.
Decarbonising coal-dependent operations starts with quantifying the impact. Use the calculator below to compare the emissions profile of Jord's torrefied C4-grass pellets against the thermal or metallurgical coal currently used in your operations. Enter your annual consumption, select your fuel type, and choose between a full drop-in conversion or a phased co-firing strategy — the calculator will show you the estimated CO₂ savings you could achieve each year, alongside the energy-equivalent tonnage of black pellets required.
Fossil fuel emission factors are based on EU reference standards. Calculator results are indicative estimates. For a detailed, site-specific emissions assessment, contact our technical team.

Discover Jord’s full range of solid biofuels alternatives

Pressed grass
Raw C4-grass biomass, mechanically pressed to reduce moisture and chlorine content before distribution. Pressed grass is the most direct form of our biomass feedstock — suitable for industrial combustion systems designed or adapted for non-pelletised solid biofuel. It offers a cost-efficient entry point for large-scale buyers operating facilities with flexible fuel handling capabilities.
Fuel pellets
Jord's fuel pellets are solid biofuel made from C4-grass, engineered for biomass boilers, industrial heating, and pellet stoves. With a high calorific value and low moisture content, they deliver reliable thermal performance for operations already equipped to handle conventional wood-pellet-grade fuel.
Briquettes
Jord’s biomass briquettes offer a larger-format solid biofuel solution, compressed from C4-grass for use in industrial furnaces, large biomass boilers, and co-firing applications. Their size and density reduce handling and storage costs relative to loose biomass, while maintaining strong calorific performance. An efficient, scalable option for buyers requiring high-volume thermal energy with a low-carbon footprint.
